In Sweden, a candlelit procession takes place on December 13. The tradition dates back to St Lucia, the Italian patron saint of light, and has pagan roots. Lussi night (winter solstice) was the longest night of the year, and was considered dangerous as people were exposed to the supernatural; it was said animals could talk and evil spirits were everywhere.
To help battle the darkness, a young girl, "Lucia" is chosen to wear a crown of light (candles) and lead a procession of children dressed in white robes. All of the children sing traditional songs. The evening typically includes saffron buns and other Swedish food. Learn more.

Join us for our annual Lucia celebration in December. Students from our Swedish School will lead the procession and sing traditional Swedish songs. After the concert, Santa (Jultomten) will drop by for a visit with the kids, while you enjoy coffee and delicious Swedish baking.
